RIV_1966-2RIV_1966-2

What to expect

  • Download the form
  • A visit from the firearms inspector
  • Install a gun safe
  • Renewal every 5 years

First of all you need the form to fill out which can be found on your local constabulary website. Mine is with Hampshire and i quickly found the form which is called a FORM_201

Each county in the UK will have a dedicated Explosive and Firearms department

A few pointers with the application

Firstly tick what you are applying for at the top

Part A - Is all about your personal details. These need to be accurate or it might cause problems with the form at a later stage

Part B - Personal Health and Medical Declaration. In recent experience they are very vigorous with this procedure and check into mental health and your wellbeing. Be warned that some Doctors Surgery charge for this process. Mine charged £100

Page 1 needs a signature at the bottom

Part C - If you have any offences then these need to be noted. BASc have an interesting article on alcohol and drink driving bans can mean a loss of a shotgun or firearms licence. BASC Article

Address History - An address for the last 5 years needs to be attached

Page 3 - Asks you to list your firearms, not your shotguns as this is needed on page 5. Be sure to write all the details down including serial numbers, make and calibre. If you get an inspection at any point your licence will need to tally with the guns that you have in your safe

You are then asked where you store the guns. My advice to you if you have not bought a gun yet or installed a gun safe then wait for the inspector to visit and ask them where they suggest you put it. You don't want to install a safe and then be asked to move it. Once installed they are very difficult to move.

Page 7 is your checklist and will also ask for 4 passport size photos ( I always sign the back and date each one)

Page 8 asks for references. Please use someone in a professional position and one without a criminal background. An employer is always good and be sure to ask them in  advance. You might be asked for 1 or 2 references depending on the licence being applied

Payment - Now that the police are up to date with technology you can supply your email address and they will email you a request which can be filled out online or alternatively you can attach a cheque if you have a cheque book
